Irish director Lenny Abrahamson, Star Wars actor John Boyega and Harry Potter actress Emma Watson are among the 683 people who today have been invited to join the prestigious Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences.

The Academy is the group that awards the Oscars every year, and its members are responsible for choosing who gets nominated, and who wins. Every year they invite new members to join - a mix of actors, directors, producers, cinematographers and other film making personal.

Abrahamson, alongside Element Picture's Ed Guiney and actress Brie Larson, were invited to join after the success of Room. The film was nominated for four Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director, with Larson winning Best Actress for her performance.

The group has come under fire in recent years for having a membership that is largely old, male and white. After this year's #OscarsSoWhite protest, Academy president Cheryl Boone Issacs vowed to diversify the organisation, and the newest recruits suggest they are trying.

683 is the largest ever number of people invited to join in one year, with 46% of these invitees being women and 41% being people of colour, and 59 countries being represented.  Other notable names who have received invitations are Idris Elba, Michael B. Jordan and Alicia Vikander.

You can the full list of new members on the Oscars website.
