The trailer for Keira Knightley’s new film ‘Colette’ has just dropped, and the rumour mill is already in overdrive that the role could lead to an Oscar nod for the actress.

Based on a true story, the film is a period-set drama – where else would you see the POTC actress after all? – in which newlywed Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette (Knightley) is convinced her by her husband Willy (Dominic West) to ghost write a novel for him based on her life experiences. The book, titled ‘Claudine’, becomes a runaway success and Colette gets none of the credit.

Frustrated by the lack of recognition and her husband’s philandering ways, Colette becomes involved with a cross-dressing noblewoman. The relationship encourages her to break away from gender roles, and sexual and societal constraints.

Knightley has previously earned Oscar nods for both ‘Pride and Prejudice’ and ‘The Imitation Game.’ What’s more, ‘Colette’ is being helmed and co-written by Wash Westmoreland, who previously co-directed Julianne Moore to an Oscar win for ‘Still Alice.’

Eleanor Tomlinson and Fiona Shaw also star.

There is no scheduled Irish release date just yet but we’d expect it to hit theatres sometime between autumn and early next year in line with awards season.

Knightley next stars in 'The Nutcracker and the Four Realms', which comes out here on October 26th.
