CGI dinosaurs don’t come cheap.

Released in 2015, Jurassic World cost $150 million to make, excluding marketing, and made $1.67 billion in the box office worldwide. That’s a pretty nice return for an investment.

While $150 million sounds like a lot, it’s actually not as gratuitously expensive as other film budgets. Consider some other blockbusters released last year – Avengers: Age of Ultron had a budget of $280 million, Spectre cost $245 million, and Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens reportedly had a gross budget twice the size of Jurassic World at $306 million (with a net budget of $246 million). Again, given the last film made over $2 billion, it would seem that big investments yield big returns.

According to Juan Antonio Bayona, who will direct the next instalment of the planned trilogy of the Jurassic Park reboot, Jurassic World 2 will have a considerably greater budget than its predecessor.

Bayona said that the new film does not yet have a title, and that this will be announced at a later date. However, he could confirm that the budget for the sequel had been set: $260 million.

This will place the film among the most expensive films of all time. The film that currently holds that title is Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, which reportedly had a budget of $378.5 million. It is followed by Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, Avengers: Age of Ultron, John Carter, and Tangled, with which Jurassic World 2 will be tied if the proposed budget happens.

It’s a lot of money folks.
