Reports are coming in that Jude Law has been chosen to play the young Albus Dumbledore in the Fantastic Beasts franchise.

Variety are reporting that Law will play the younger version of the wizard portrayed by Richard Harris and Michael Gambon in the Harry Potter movies.

“As fans ourselves, we are thrilled to have Jude Law joining the ‘Fantastic Beasts’ cast, playing a character so universally adored,” Toby Emmerich, president and chief content officer of Warner Bros. Pictures, said. “Jude has been a member of the Warner Bros. family for years and we’re excited to embark on this new adventure with him.”

Dumbledore is expected to be a key player in the four Fantastic Beasts sequels that Warner Bros. have planned. The movies are expected to heavily feature the relationship between Dumbledore and the villainous Gellert Grindelwald, in particular an epic duel between the two which ends with Dumbledore becoming master of the Elder Wand and Grindelwald being imprisoned in Nurmengard.

Eddie Redmayne will return to the lead role as Newt Scamander while Johnny Depp will also return as Grindelwald.

David Yates who directed the first installment of the franchise as well as the last four entries into the Harry Potter films will also be helming the sequel.
