You'd think after Attack the Block and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, John Boyega would have had enough of trying stop powerful extra terrestrial entities. Think again.

He's signed on to play the son of Idris Elba's Stacker Pentecost in Pacific Rim: Maelstrom. He'll be the leading man in the sequel to the 2013 original which will see Steven S. DeKnight take over the directing reigns from Guillermo Del Toro.

This will be DeKnight's feature film debut, having cut his teeth in TV as a showrunner on Spartacus before tackling season one of Netflix's Daredevil.

Del Toro, who is still serving as a producer on the film said in a statement that: "I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox. The Pacific Rim universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world. ‘The World saving the world’ was our goal and I couldn't think of a better man for the job."
