James Gunn, the writer and director of Guardians of the Galaxy and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, has announced the release date of the third movie following the misfit superheroes.

A fan asked Gunn on Twitter if there was going to be a third instalment for the superhero alien team at all, and Gunn confirmed not only that the film is happening, but that it’s coming to cinemas in two years’ time:

The director has remained vague about what the upcoming movie will be about, which is probably because it could contain spoilers about Infinity War and the unnamed fourth Avengers film.

Reports have previously indicated that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and company have been sitting on a few 2020 dates - May 1, August 7, and November 1 - so it’s likely that GOTG: Vol. 3 will take one of these slots, but which one or what the other two Marvel movies released that year will be remains uncertain.
