In other casting news this morning we have.... *drumroll pease*... Joaquin Phoenix for Lex Luthor role?

Now that's not one we'd have thought of previously while our heads were stuck firmly in Bryan Cranston mode but now that we let the image sink in, there's no telling why this couldn't work. Phoenix certainly has the gravitas to pull off such a role, he can go dark, for shizzle, and with a shaved (and shiny) head, there'd be no stopping him.

Phoenix is known for his weightier, conflicted roles so to have him on board would certainly take the tone of Superman Vs Batman (and the Man of Steel sequel) in a more Nolanised direction (which we probably all want), making it much less sugary than Zack Snyder's first Superman offering.

Nothing is set in stone as of yet but Variety are telling us that Phoenix is top of Warner Brothers' wish lists and he may well be offered the villainous role before the year is out. Though whether it's just for the Man of Steel sequel or also for the movie that brings both Superman and Batman together, we're not yet sure.
