Those of you chomping at the bit to experience Independence Day in all its 3D glory may be waiting a little longer. In fact, it may not happen at all. Independence Day 3D was due to hit US cinemas next July (3rd), to coincide with their Independence Day festivities, however the studio behind the release, 20th Century Fox, have now allegedly shelved this plan.

We're currently in the dark as to why they've pulled the plug but us being the kind of folk who prefer to see the glass as half full are hoping it still might happen; if ever there was a movie that could benefit from an extra dimension, it's this. 3D aliens and spaceships coming at yer face and whatnot.

What we can look forward to though is Roland Emmerich's two planned sequels which we're hoping will still go ahead - Independence Day Forever Part One and Independence Day Forever Part Two.

Only one burning question remains; will Will Smith return?
