The Irish Film Institute celebrates its twentieth anniversary this September with a month long celebration which includes a season of films that shaped the IFI, a weekend of free screenings, pop up musuem, a nostalgic day of 1992, interactive tours, an Oscar and a party.
The IFI will be celebrating in tis landmark premises at the old Quaker Meeting house in Temple Bar which was once known as the IFC. Since it's opening the IFI has seen over 3.1 million cinema attendances to see 63,000 screenings of over 5900 films. Speaking about the IFI Director Ross Keane said ' The IFI’s home in Temple Bar is all about the people who come here to engage with our extensive programme, so when we started to plan our anniversary celebrations, we quickly decided that we wanted the focus to be on our audience. We want to celebrate the experiences that our audiences have had here over the last 20 years by reliving some of the big moments whilst also looking to the future'
To kick things off, on the 1st September with a screening of the first film ever shown in the IFI in 1992 and to keep with the audiences can avail of 1992 prices on tea and coffee and join in on a quiz of all things nineties. The IFI will also host an Open Weekend on September 15th and 16th with a wide range of free screenings of films old and new alike. Running throughout the month is an IFI Legacy Films Season where 20 of the most siggnificant films the IFI has shown in the last two decades will be shown. Ther is a huge range of events taking place to mark the occasion which will all acumulate in a Gala closing Night and the european premiere of a major Irish film release.
