Omar Sharif, the famous Hollywood leading man who starred in a number of cinematic classics, has passed away today at the age of 83.

The Egyptian actor rose to fame through his roles in Lawrence of Arabia and Dr. Zhivago, which made him a household name around the world and a bona fide Hollywood star, with his performances earning him Oscar nominations and three Golden Globes.

Back in May, Sharif's sons confirmed that he had been battling Alzheimer's disease for a period, and today his agent Steve Kenis confirmed the news of his passing, saying that "he suffered a heart attack this afternoon in a hospital in Cairo."
