This is really heart-breaking stuff.

Ledger, who is best-known for his Oscar-winning performance as the Joker in The Dark Knight, died in 2008 after taking a mixture of prescription drugs. He was 28 years old.

His father, Kim Ledger, recently spoke with The Daily Mail Australia about what happened.

‘It was totally his fault. It was no one else's,’ he said. ‘he reached for them. He put them in his system. You can't blame anyone else in that situation.

‘That's hard to accept because I loved him so much and was so proud of him.’

Kim, who has launched a new campaign to raise awareness of prescription drug abuse, revealed that the last time Heath spoke to a member of the family was the night before his death.

Heath’s sister had called the actor to warn him ‘not to take the prescription medications with the sleeping tablets.’

Kim explains: ‘[Heath] said "Katie, Katie, I'm fine. I know what I'm doing." He would have had no idea.’

Kim is now determined to raise awareness of the dangers of opioid abuse, saying, ‘[Australians] are definitely not up to speed with just how bad these things can be.

‘Heath mixed a couple of drugs together with sleeping tablets and he’s gone forever. That’s something we [himself, wife Sally and sister Kate] just have to deal with.’
