A major role in 'Top Gun: Maverick' could end up going to either Miles Teller, Nicholas Hoult or Glen Powell.

The role, according to THR, will be that of Goose's son and the movie will focus on the relationship between Maverick and Goose's son - and will probably feature some really intense sequence over Goose's son blaming Maverick for his father's death because, come on, this thing writes itself here.

'The Maze Runner' star Dylan O'Brien and 'The Shanara Chronicles' alum Austin Butler were understood to be in the running for the role, but producers Jerry Bruckheimer, the Cruiser himself, and David Ellison, have apparently brought it down to three choices. Miles Teller is perhaps best known for his performance alongside JK Simmons in the thriller (?) 'Whiplash' whilst Glen Powell was one of the ensemble cast in Richard Linklater's excellent comedy 'Everybody Wants Some!!'. Nicholas Hoult, meanwhile, should be recognisable to audiences from the likes of 'X-Men: First Class' and 'Mad Max: Fury Road'.

Teller has the advantage here as he starred in Joseph Kosinski's last directing credit, 'Only The Brave', which basically played like 'Top Gun' for fighters and really showed that Kosinski could take the lead on 'Top Gun: Maverick' and make it something interesting. Currently, only Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer - that's Mr. Iceman to you - are confirmed for casting at the moment, but it's also understood that Kenny Loggins is coming back to do the music.

BECAUSE OF COURSE HE IS. 'Top Gun: Maverick' is set for release on July 12th, 2019.
