Well this is unwelcome news.
George Miller has come out and said he won't be directing any future installments of the Mad Max franchise.
The news is as equally surprising as it is upsetting as Miller teased that he would like to make sequels to Mad Max: Fury Road while promoting the movie. However it seems that now that he's had some time away from it he's realised that the grueling production schedule that he endured for that movie would be too much to go through again.
“I won’t make more Mad Max movies," he said at the Golden Globes. "Fury Road was forever getting completed. If you finish one in a year, it’s considered a leap of faith. Start, stop, start again. I’ve shot in Australia in a field of wild flowers and flat red earth when it rained heavily forever. We had to wait 18 months and every return to the US was 27 hours. Those films take forever. I won’t do those anymore.”
We can understand where he's coming from. Fury Road was a troubled production and at 70 years of age Miller must be questioning if he really wants to put himself through that again. We should point out that this doesn't mean there won't be a sequel to Fury Road (its critical and commercial success almost guarantees that we'll see one) it just means that Miller won't be the one calling the shots should the time come.
Here's hoping he'll change his mind though because as Fury Road proved there is no better man to bring the world of Max Rockatansky to the big screen.
