Oscar winner George Kennedy died late last night at the age of 91.

The World War II veteran and character actor racked up a truly impressive filmography during his long career. While most younger audiences will know Kennedy from The Naked Gun trilogy alongside Leslie Nielsen and OJ Simpson, Kennedy had a successful career playing no-nonsense tough guys.

He won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar as Dragline, Paul Newman's rival-turned-friend, in the 1967 classic Cool Hand Luke. Kennedy also starred in Clint Eastwood's gripping 1975 thriller, The Eiger Sanction, and even turned up in the so-bad-it's-good '80s action film The Delta Force alongside Chuck Norris and Lee Marvin.

Kennedy also had a recurring role in Dallas as Carter McKay, a rival of the Ewings, and most recently starred in the so-so remake of The Gambler alongside Mark Wahlberg. Kennedy is survived by his six children and grandchildren.
