Most of everyone is looking forward to the Bank Holiday Weekend (THREE DAY WEEKEND, WOO!), with a lot of the younger ones also lucky enough to get the whole of next week off, too (NINE DAYS OFF IN A ROW? IS THIS HEAVEN??). Thankfully, the Cinema Gods have aligned the stars to make sure that should you head to your local big screen as a family, there’s plenty of quality movies to choose from. Here’s what we recommend you check out, in between your horror marathons leading up to Halloween!

ALEXANDER AND THE TERRIBLE, HORRIBLE, NO GOOD, VERY BAD DAY
Everyone has had a bad day, but Alexander, every day is a bad day. One day he decides that enough is enough, and decides that his otherwise perfect family should live in his shoes for a day, and wishes that they experience his level of un-luck. Someone must’ve been listening to him, because that’s exactly what ends up happening, with some hilarious consequences! Steve Carrell, Jennifer Gardner and Donald Glover fill out the grown up roles, and this really is one of the family movies with something for everyone. Check out our review right here!

THE BOOK OF LIFE
If you’re looking for something filled to the brim with eye popping visuals and a unique style all of it’s own, then look no further than The Book Of Life. Produced by Mexican auteur Guillermo Del Toro, this tells the story of The Day Of The Dead, as two best friends (Diego Luna and Channing Tatum) compete for the hand of the woman they both love (Zoe Saldana), as their entire endeavour is looked over by the gods of love and death. Sounds kinda heavy, we know, but it’s actually very, very funny, and those visuals really are breath-taking, with the 3D put to some great use. Read our full review here!

THE MAZE RUNNER
Something for the slightly older kids, sorry, teenagers… or tweengers (although we hate that word), The Maze Runner is the latest attempt to cash in on the Young Adult Adaptation money, but unlike most of the recent entries, this one is actually pretty good! A group of teenage boys wake up in the middle of field, surrounded by a giant maze, with no memory of how they got there, and it only gets stranger from there. If you liked The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, then this should be right up your alley. Full review can be found right here.

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES
To be honest, our hopes weren’t particularly high for this one, as it’s got the director of Battle: Los Angeles working under the tutelage (or is that turtleage? HA HA!) of Michael Bay. Turns out it’s actually a lot of fun, with April O Neill played by none other than Megan Fox, and she’s investigating the rumours of six foot tall turtles doing battle against New York’s bad guys. Decent action scenes, funny in the right places, and some great special effects definitely make it worth 90 minutes of your time. Our full review is right over here!

Of course there’s also plenty of family movies to check out on Netflix, and if you’ve got a particular favorite that you’ll be showing to the younger audience members of your family, sound off your suggestions in the comments section below!
