Element Pictures' The Killing of a Sacred Deer, starring our own Colin Farrell and Barry Keoghan, was among the prize winners at the Cannes Film Festival last night.

The film, directed by The Lobster's Yorgos Lathminos and co-starring Nicole Kidman and Alicia Silverstone, was the joint recipient of the Best Screenplay award. The Killing of a Sacred Deer shared the honour with Lynne Ramsay's You Were Never Really Here. The film was tipped to be in the mix for a prize after it's screening at the festival last week. Dublin's Barry Keoghan came in for particular high praise for his performance.

The top prize at the festival, the coveted Palme d'Or went to Ruben Östlund’s polarizing art industry satire The Square.

Sofia Coppola made history by becoming only the second ever woman to win the Best Director award for latest effort, The Beguiled. A remake of the 1971 Don Siegel film of the same name, it also stars Nicole Kidman and Colin Farrell.

Kidman was touted by many critics to be in line for the Best Actress award but was eventually pipped by Diane Kruger who won Fatih Akin’s In the Fade. The Big Little Lies star was instead awarded with a special award from the jury to coincide with the festival's 70th anniversary. Joaquin Phoenix was awarded the Best Actor prize.
