As we've said before, Richard Kelly's exile since The Box is an absolute crime considering that David Ayer appears to be getting work even though Suicide Squad was a steaming pile of dogs***.

Of course, it could very well be that Kelly's absence may be self-imposed or something, but it's most likely down to the fact that both Southland Tales and The Box weren't warmly received by audiences at the time. What's clear from Kelly's career is that time has always plagued him.

After all, Donnie Darko was released on the week as 9/11 and only began to receive the credit it deserved after the fact. The film was hugely formative for a lot of people and, since then, there's been talk of a sequel to it. Granted, there was an unofficial sequel - which Kelly actively campaigned against - but now, it looks like there may be something on the horizon for Kelly and Donnie Darko.

In an interview with HMV, Kelly expounded on the rumours about the sequel and confirmed that he is actively working on it. "I think there’s something much bigger and more ambitious to do in that universe. It’s big and expensive and I think there’s time to get to that. I want to make sure we’ve got the budget to do it justice and not to compromise anything. Another story in this world needs resources and we need to have that in place. I need to get my next film out of the gate and then we can go back and look at it."

Kelly also confirmed that he plans "to be back behind a camera in 2017" and that he's making several movies back-to-back. While he didn't go so far as to say that one of them would be the Donnie Darko sequel, it's nevertheless encouraging to see him back at it again.
