Interesting seems the best way to describe Miller’s latest venture, given how it could go really well or horribly wrong.
The director of Deadpool was aligned to helm the foul-mouthed superhero’s sequel too, but departed the project due supposedly to ‘creative differences’.
What will he replace it with? Reportedly, Miller will executive produce Sony's feature film adaptation of video game character Sonic the Hedgehog. The flick is being developed as a Paddington-style CG-animation/live-action ‘family film’ hybrid (which seems to be a popular format of late with Disney reboots too).
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Miller will be working alongside regular collaborator Jeff Fowler (the two worked together on Oscar nominated animated short Gopher Broke) who is in line to direct. Producer Neal H. Moritz of the Fast and Furious franchise is also on board. ‘Golan the Insatiable’ creators Patrick Casey and Josh Miller are writing the script.
Miller said in a statement: ‘Jeff is an incredible director with strong story instincts. The world of Sonic presents the perfect opportunity for him to leverage his experience in animation to bring new dimension to this iconic character.’
Sonic the Hedgehog follows Sonic and his friends, Tails and Knuckles, in their attempts to thwart the evil plans of Doctor Eggman Robotnik. The Sega video game was released in 1991 and has sold over 350 million copies across various platforms, making the character one of the world’s biggest gaming icons.
A number of animated television series have been adapted from the character but this will be the blue hedgehog’s first film venture (excluding Wreck It Ralph, in which the character briefly appeared).
