Daniel Craig is back as Bond (having been given a hefty pay cheque, we’d imagine), but the question of who will be directing him in the iconic superspy’s 25th outing remains a mystery.

Last week, it was confirmed that the legendary Dark Knight trilogy and Dunkirk director Christopher Nolan won’t be taking on the feat and now, according to Variety, there’s another director who is high on MGM studio’s list to helm it.

Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle, whose numerous film credits include Slumdog Millionaire, 28 Days Later, 127 Hours, Trainspotting and Steve Jobs, has keen interest in the project and always wanted to direct a Bond film.

According to Variety, he is currently developing a project for Working Title, but with no cast currently attached. This means that the movie could be pushed back so he can direct Bond 25. Mind you, sources say that no formal offer has been made just yet.

Boyle has long been in the running to direct a Bond movie, going back to Skyfall and Spectre. He previously directed James Bond when he oversaw the sequence where Daniel Craig's character meets the Queen as part of the 2012 Olympic Games opening ceremony .

Yann Demange, who previously helmed the thrilling Northern-Ireland set film ’71, was also considered a top choice but according to reports, MGM and Eon’s preference would be to have a better-known name at the helm.
