Christian Bale is known for giving his all whenever he steps in front of camera.

There isn't one performance we can think of where Christian Bale phoned it in; even going all the way back to Empire of the Sun. However, Bale obviously holds himself to a much higher standard than we all do. In a recent interview, Bale was asked about - what else - The Dark Knight trilogy and his time working with Heath Ledger and Christopher Nolan.

Surprisingly, Bale was quite open about his own problems with Bruce Wayne and Batman and where he envisioned the character arc for them going. "He's this very, very very, dark character. When I put on the suit, I'd just feel like an idiot if I don't use this as a tool, that this is his true monstrous self that he allows to come out in that moment."

Bale essentially wanted to see a much more twisted version of Batman than we saw, but sure enough, Heath Ledger changed everything. "Heath turned up, and just kind of completely ruined all my plans... He’s so much more interesting than me and what I’m doing."

It's true, Heath Ledger did steal every scene he was in and rightfully won a posthumous Oscar for the role, but Christian Bale did have something interesting going on in The Dark Knight. Bale, however, doesn't think so. "I didn’t quite manage what I hoped I would throughout the trilogy... Chris (Nolan) did, but my own sense of self is like, I didn’t quite nail it." For his part, Bale is still pretty firm on where he stands with Batman and the DC Comics Universe, saying "...we did our thing, it's done, I've nothing else to offer it."
