Breaking Dawn To Be Split Into Two Movies?

Breaking Dawn To Be Split Into Two Movies?

01 December 2009

Variety is this morning reporting that Summit Entertainment, the mini-studio behind the Twilight series, are seriously considering splitting the final film, Breaking Dawn into two parts.

According to the trade paper, the executives at the studio are also extremely keen on bringing New Moon director Chris Weitz back for the fourth film, but a deal is yet to be struck. While something similar happened with the final Harry Potter film, Warner Bros. the studio behind that franchise, had to pay serious clams to its stars and director to get them back - as they all only had a deal until the book series officially finished.

While New Moon has now accumulated a staggering worldwide haul of $481 million and counting, everyone, including writer of the novels, Stephenie Meyer, would have to get a serious piece of the pie. Above all else, though, that means eight figure paydays for the three main cast members, whose agents must be foaming around the mouth with excitement about this.

Still a cynical move if you ask me. Summit are just trying to make as much money as possible, which is fair enough, but the fans are the ones who are paying. Expect a backlash if this goes ahead.

I think it would be better if it was split into 2 movies that way they aren't skipping so much from the book to try in fit it in

Having read the book, I think splitting Breaking Dawn into two movies is not a move from Summit to make more money (although naturally this does obviously help making the decision). There is a lot of story in the book that if shortened to fit into 125mins would entirely alienate viewers who have not read the book to fill the gaps. This has already happened in Twilight and New Moon to some extend. With such a huge book as Breaking Dawn it would possibly even disappoint the fans who did actually read it. An overlength film might do the job just fine but again might not cut it. I personally would rather visit the cinema twice and get the full story than once and be disappointed.
