There have been a few biblical epics over the years but very few of them have featured Hollywood heavyweights. That's why were were a little surprised to hear that none other than Brad Pitt may be starring in a new Warner Brothers project about the life and times of Pontious Pilate.

Deadline's reporting that the Fight Club and Oceans 11 star has expressed an interest in playing the infamous figure. Pontious Pilate is, of course, the man credited with sending Jesus to his death after presiding over his trial in the New Testament. Vera Blasi, who wrote Penelope Cruz RomCom Woman on Top, has penned the script.  It's said to feature other key biblical figures such as Mary Magdalene, John the Baptist and Caligula.

"He seemed a great way to offer context to this very famous event" said Blasi of her central character, "and if you look at it from the perspective of the Roman governor of that time, it allows for an investigation of the politics of Judea at the time, and what it was like to be occupied by Rome."

In the meantime Brad returns to a cinema near you later this year in zombie epic World War Z. It hits Irish cinemas on June 21st.
