For a brief period in the '70s, blaxploitation cinema became a mainstream success - thanks, in large, parts to Shaft and Isaac Hayes' iconic theme song for it.
There were, of course, other films in the same genre that included Foxy Brown and Cleopatra Jones, both of which Quentin Tarantino referenced in Jackie Brown - and Super Fly, which was also referenced in Ridley Scott's American Gangster. Like Shaft, one of the legacies of Super Fly is its incredible score from Curtis Mayfield - and hopefully, it'll play a part in the newly-announced remake.
While details on the film are light at the moment, Variety reports that Alex Tse - who wrote 2009's Watchmen - is working on a screenplay, with action impresario Joel Silver onboard as producer. Casting is obviously miles away from happening and there's every chance that this may fall through, but a modern-day remake of a blaxploitation classic isn't all that crazy.
Samuel L. Jackson is set to reprise his role as Shaft in 2019, so Sony - the studio behind this remake - are obviously latching on to something that they think might work.
