There wasn’t a whole lot of good that came out of ‘Suicide Squad’ aside from Margot Robbie’s performance as Harley Quinn. If the talent of her castmates for her character’s spin-off is anything to go by though, this DC movie is going to be waaay better than that sh**show.

As previously announced, Cathy Yan has been lined up to direct the Warner Bros./DC project – making her the first female Asian director to helm a superhero movie – based on the 'Birds of Prey' comic series. As of last week, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Jurnee Smollett-Bell have been added to the cast.

Winstead, last seen in the third season of ‘Fargo’ and no stranger to superhero movies having starred in ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’, and Smollett-Bell, a ‘Friday Night Lights’ alum, will join Robbie’s Harley Quinn as Huntress and Black Canary, respectively.

The Wrap reports that Rosie Perez will join them in the role of Renee Montoya, an openly gay detective working for the Gotham City Police Department. During The New 52 comics, she takes on a costumed identity, becoming the Question.

Perez broke out as Tina in Spike Lee’s ‘Do the Right Thing.’ She is also known for her roles in ‘White Men Can’t Jump’ and ‘Fearless’, the latter for which she earned an Oscar and Golden Globe nomination.

The Wrap additionally reports that the villain in ‘Birds of Prey’ has been revealed to be Black Mask, one of Batman’s foes who has never before appeared on the big screen. The brutal crime lord wears a trademark black skull mask and has a penchant for torture.

The upcoming movie follow the ventures of an all-female gang operating out of Gotham City. Production is expected to begin in early 2019 with a release date slated for February 7, 2020.

Another Harley Quinn movie, based on her relationship with the Joker, is also said to be in the works.
