We all know that looks count in the movie biz - and that fact isn't restricted to the actors that appear on screen. The 10 movies that have been shortlisted for the Best Visual Effects Oscar have just been announced.

Visual effects are used to add that extra dimension to 'big' movies and take them to the next level. The Best Visual Effects category allows big budget blockbusters that wouldn't exactly be considered Oscar bait (ahem, Pacific Rim) a chance to stand alongside the creme de la creme. It makes sense after all, the guys behind those effects produce amazing results and they should be recognised for it.

The 10 shortlisted films are Elysium, Gravity, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Iron Man 3, The Lone Ranger, Oblivion, Pacific Rim, Star Trek Into Darkness, Thor: The Dark World and World War Z.

In January, the Academy will choose five of the films for final Oscar consideration and the winner will be revealed at the ceremony to be held on March 2. Our bet is on Gravity but what do you think? Let us know below.
