The Thomas Edison biopic ‘The Current War’, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, will see the light of day after all. The film was initially due for release last November but was delayed because of its associated with disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, having been produced by The Weinstein Company.

The fate of the company and its final two films – ‘The Current War’ and horror movie ‘Polaroid’ (both officially pulled from release a year ago) – had been up in the air for a long time as the sale of TWC repeatedly fell through.

Last May, it looked all but confirmed that Lantern Capital Partners had bought the company (just as Weinstein was hit with another lawsuit). The firm paid $289 million for what remained of TWC.

‘The Current War’, which premiered at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival, has gone without a domestic release but in a new development, Lantern Entertainment (an affiliate of Lantern Capital) and 13 Films have partnered up to handle foreign distribution of the Weinstein-tainted movie.

Cumberbatch stars as Thomas Edison in ‘The Current War’ while Michael Shannon plays George Westinghouse. The film follows the electricity innovators’ rivalry and also stars Nicholas Hoult, Tom Holland, Katherine Waterston and Tuppence Middleton.

Lantern Entertainment and 13 Films will also handle the foreign distribution of ‘Polaroid’ since both titles were acquired through Lantern’s acquisition of assets of TWC. Based on the award-winning short by Lars Klevberg and from the producers of the ‘The Ring’ and ‘The Grudge’, the horror movie centres on high school loner Bird Fitcher, who he has no idea what dark secrets are tied to the vintage Polaroid camera she stumbles upon.

Lantern Entertainment is also distributing ‘The Intouchables’ remake ‘The Upside’ in association with STX Entertainment. The movie stars Kevin Hart, Bryan Cranston and Nicole Kidman. Its first trailer dropped last week.
