Avatar Has Huge Worldwide Opening

21 December 2009

Avatar finally launched worldwide this passing weekend, picking up a mammoth $232.2 million in its first weekend of release.

Its stateside bow came in below expectations at $73 million, as the east coast of America was bombarded with snow blizzards, causing folks to stay at home. But exit polls saw the film graded A by cinemagoers, and James Cameron's movies generally have extremely strong legs.

Elsewhere, the atrocious Hugh Grant/Sarah Jessica Parker romantic comedy Did You Hear About The Morgans? bombed, taking a paltry $7 million over the three days.
