One of the most fascinating ways the Marvel Cinematic Universe has expanded is how it's managed to rope in some pretty interesting actors over the years.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier had Robert Redford as its central villain, Harry Dean Stanton turned up in a small cameo in Avengers Assemble, Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfeiffer are in for Ant-Man And The Wasp, and now the upcoming Captain Marvel has landed four-time Oscar nominee Annette Bening in an unspecified role. The report by THR is light on details, except to say that she'll be playing some kind of scientist.

Bening is an intriguing choice, to say the least, as she almost never signs on for big studio roles such as this - let alone comic-book movies. In fact, the closest thing she's done to something like this would be either 1996's Mars Attacks! with Tim Burton - purely on the basis that it had aliens in it and was kind of nuts. Other than that, there's no similarity to this whatsoever.

Captain Marvel hits Irish cinemas on March 8th, 2019.
