Although Spider-Man seems to be returning to our good graces - what with the character turning up in Captain America: Civil War and all - it's clear Sony that are looking to capitalise on this goodwill.

Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the geniuses behind Lego Movie, 21 Jump Street and Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs, have been announced as directors of the first animated Spider-Man movie.

The movie, which will be separate from the live-action movies, will see the friendly neighboured web-slinger swing into cinemas in 2018.

Lord and Miller will exec-produce, write and "mastermind" the project, however it's not known if they'll take on directing duties for the film.

They may step into the fold or bring one of their mentored directors in to look after it.

Look, it's very early days - 2018's a long time away so don't be surprised if this gets shelved at some point in favour of Lord / Miller actually directing a live-action Spider-Man film instead.

Either way, it's pretty cool to see Spider-Man back in action after the lacklustre Andrew Garfield entries.
