British born actor Andrew Garfield has just been cast as Peter Parker in the reboot of the Spiderman series, being helmed by (500) Days of Summer director Marc Webb.

Garfield is having a pretty spectacular run of work with directors; he just wrapped films with Spike Jonze (I’m Here), David Fincher (The Social Network) and Mark Romanek (Never Let Me Go). Both ‘Network’ and ‘Go’ have been garnering serious early awards buzz, and Garfield could very well be a star by the time the film starts shooting in December. He previously popped up in Red Riding and The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus.

On the casting, Marc Webb spewed in a Sony Press Release; “Though his name may be new to many, those who know this young actor’s work understand his extraordinary talents. He has a rare combination of intelligence, wit, and humanity. Mark my words, you will love Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker.”

It was thought that Parker would be of high school age, but Drew McWeeny at Hitfix.com has heard rumblings that it would actually see Parker in college; which would see the casting of 27 year old Garfield, and not one of the much mooted teens, make more sense. The film won’t be released until summer 2012.
