It's fair to say that Harley Quinn - and more pointedly Margot Robbie's portrayal of the character - made Suicide Squad barely watchable.
The emphasis here is on barely because, let's face it, Suicide Squad was absolute muck. Anyway, Margot Robbie is now officially big business for studios and is pretty much able to open a film all by herself, so it should come as no surprise that the rumoured Harley Quinn spinoff is now officially underway.
According to THR, Robbie has signed a first-look deal with Warner Bros. through her own production company, LuckyChap Entertainment, and has the Harley Quinn spinoff movie on its slate with Robbie acting as an executive producer. As well as this, Robbie also has a biopic of disgraced figure-skater Tonya Harding in the works.
Despite the critical pummeling that Suicide Squad got, it still managed to bring close to €700 million and it hasn't even hit the home market yet. DC's cinematic universe has the distinction of beating Marvel to the punch when it comes to female-led films, as Wonder Woman's due for a 2017 release, beating Marvel's Captain Marvel by two whole years.
No release date has been pencilled in for the Harley Quinn spinoff, but it's likely to be sometime after Justice League and the Batman standalone movie. It's still unclear if Suicide Squad will get a sequel or if they'll simply funnel it all into the Harley Quinn spinoff, as Suicide Squad was expected to clear $750 to $800 million in order for it to break even and is only now close to reaching that, well over a month after its release.
