Stephen Gately Dies

11 October 2009

Stephen Gately has died, aged 33.

He was on holidays in Majorca with his partner, Andy Cowles (who he married in a civil ceremony in 2006). He went out, had a few drinks, and never woke up.

The message on Boyzone.net currently reads: "Stephen tragically died yesterday (Saturday) whilst on holiday in Majorca with his partner Andrew. We have no more details at the moment. The rest of the band are traveling to Majorca this morning."

Louis Walsh, who is due to appear on the X Factor results show tonight, said: "We're all absolutely devastated. I'm in complete shock. I was only with him on Monday at an awards ceremony. We don't know much about what's happened yet. I only heard after The X Factor and we will rally around each other this week. He was a great man."

His last message on Twitter, posted on 6 October, said: "still busy - lots going on. Focussing on finishing my book next so may be quiet here" (sic)

Michael Jackson, Farrah Fawcett, Bobby Robson, Jade Goody, Wendy Richards, David Carradine, Natasha Richardson, John Hughes, Patrick Swayze, Adam Goldstein, Stephen Gately. Countless other friends and family... the sooner 2009 ends, the better.

UPDATE: A statement from Ronan Keating, Keith Duffy, Mikey Graham and Shane Lynch reads: "We are completely devastated by the loss of our friend and brother, Stephen. We have shared such wonderful times together over the years and were all looking forward to sharing many more. Stephen was a beautiful person in both body and spirit. He lit up our lives and those of the many friends he had all over the world. Our love and sympathy go out to Andrew and Stephen's family. We love you and will miss you forever, 'Steo'."

Celebrity solicitor and family friend, Gerald Kean, said he the singer died of natural causes, without being able to identify them at this point.

"There's no foul play involved, and it's not suicide. It's just a tragic accident is what we've been told, and we're happy that that is correct information," Kean said. "There is nothing untoward. It's not drugs, we don't believe. It's not suicide. It's not murder. It's not a fight. That's what we've been told."

An autopsy is expected to be conducted on Tuesday.

This is awful! I was a massive Boyzone fan when I was a kid and he was my favourite. 33 is too young.

RIP Stephen. He was too young. You're right, the sooner 2009 ends the better. The Grim Reaper is doing too much overtime.

Seriously what is up with this year? Natasha Richardson, Jade Goody, Keith Floyd, Darren Sutherland? These people were seem to have been taken in their prime. Even the celebs that were sick were fighting til the last minute and it was still shocking! I can't quite believe it. Rest in Peace to all, may whatever struggles you faced on earth be gone and may eternal peace be with you all, And to anyone who has lost anybody this year like myself, I hope you are coping, and take each day as it comes. Death may be inevitable but that doesn't ease the shock or pain. Know that you are not alone and every person you pass in the street or at work is sharing some form of grief, I know it not much of a condolance but don't feel alone in it, talk about it, talk about the people that have passed, let them exist in our thoughts and words. RIP to all
