The revelation of the cases of sexual assault allegedly committed by Harvey Weinstein – news which first emerged earlier this month – has shook the industry to its core.

Given the acts were reportedly committed over a number of decades, actors, directors and other members of the film industry with connections to the Weinstein Company continue to be asked why the Hollywood mogul’s behaviour was tolerated for so long and how much did they know.

Previously, George Clooney was one of a number of actors who spoke out against Weinstein just days after a lengthy report was published about the producer in the New York Times. Clooney described Weinstein’s behaviour as “indefensible” and said he had “never seen any of this behavior—ever.” They had worked together on Clooney’s first film, From Dusk Till Dawn.

Meanwhile, Matt Damon was accused of 'killing a story' about the producer – who he collaborated with for both The Talented Mr. Ripley and Good Will Hunting – back in 2004. However, the accusation emerged as false and Matt said that he "felt sick to his stomach" when he heard the allegations.

Now both Clooney and Damon, the former of whom directs the latter in the upcoming movie Suburbicon, have appeared on Good Morning America to discuss the matter in detail.

“When people say everybody knew, yeah, I knew he was an *sshole,” says Damon. “He was proud of that. That’s how he carried himself. I knew he was a womanizer. I wouldn’t want to be married to the guy, but that’s not my business, really. But this level of criminal sexual predation is not something that I ever thought was going on. Absolutely not.”

Damon also admitted that he knew that Weinstein had attempted to get his Mr. Ripley co-star Gwyneth Paltrow to give him a massage in an LA hotel room back in 1995 but that “that they had come to whatever agreement or understanding they had come to. She had handled it.” Damon also alleged that Weinstein “didn’t do it out in the open.”

Clooney, meanwhile, said: “The idea that this predator, this assaulter, is out there silencing women? It’s beyond infuriating, and the fact that the story is coming out now? The more it comes out? I want to know all of it.

“There has to be a comeuppance for all of this. All of the people who were a part of that chain. Then we have to make it safe for people to feel that they can talk about this. And in doing that, I think that will scare away that kind of behavior.”
