As you may or may not have seen, Mariah Carey's car-crash of a performance at Times Square in New York has become something of a viral sensation.

The singer took to Twitter to pretty much shrug off the whole thing, but now her publicists are explaining away what happened in more finer detail. Long story short? Technical difficulties. Shocker.

According to Carey's publicist, Nicole Perna, "there was nothing she could do to continue with the performance given the circumstances." If you look back at the video, you can see Carey fidgeting with her earpiece and she does mention that she can't hear herself singing in the monitors.

Yet, on the other hand, there are some reports that Carey's people didn't know what time the giant ball dropped at on New Year's Eve. Carey was scheduled to go on stage right after the ball dropped - as it has done since the '60s - at 12AM.

This isn't the first time Carey has thrown a strop when it came to a live performance in New York. In 2014, Carey had a disastrous performance for the Rockefeller Center's annual tree-lighting ceremony - which she arrived to over three hours late.

In any case, last night's was a sh*t-show of a performance and it quite beautifully summed up 2016 in all its forms.
