Colin Firth and his wife, Livia Giuggolini, have revealed in an official statement that the man they accuse of stalking them had a relationship with Giuggolini.

In the statement delivered to the Times, it explains that Firth and Giuggolini separated a few years ago privately, but have since reunited. "During that time Livia briefly became involved with former friend Mr. (Marco) Brancaccia," the journalist who they now accuse of stalking Giuggolini. The statement goes on, saying that, after this "Brancaccia carried out a frightening campaign of harassment over several months, much of which is documented."

"For obvious reasons, the Firths have never had any desire to make this matter public." The statement concludes that much of the reporting "is understood to be the consequence of a leaked court document." Brancaccia, in an interview with Italian newspaper ANSA, claims the relationship took place between 2015 and 2016, and the alleged harassment amounts to nothing more than "two messages via WhatsApp after she ended our relationship in June 2016, and an email."

"I wrote an email to Colin about my relationship with Livia, which I now regret sending, and she filed a complaint against me for stalking out of fear that I could go public with what she had revealed to me about her marriage and work."

Firth has not made any further statements on the matter as of yet.
