Dublin 4-piece driver are less than a year old, but they clearly don't intend to mess around. This 3-track CD suggests that they have the creative power as well as the ambition to make a serious mark sooner rather than later. Their sound is a little hard to pigeonhole - they rock like Sonic Youth, but their pained lyrics suggest they also have the sensitivity of the Smiths. Pick of the bunch is the title track 'Closer', an anguished plea to an estranged partner that vibrates with a real emotional depth. The odd unnecessary wig-out and cliched lyric suggests that driver are not the finished product just yet. But this is certainly a very promising start.
