Wilt - Bastinado

 rated 3

Review Date: 11 July 2000

Cormac Battle has already served time as the singer in Kerbdog, a Kilkenny band which produced some fine grunge-style records but failed to make a commercial breakthrough. His new band Wilt is a more straightforward affair, specialising in fast, catchy power-pop. This debut album kicks off with three melodic singles, driven by crunchy guitars and tight harmonies, and from there the pace rarely lets up. It's not exactly groundbreaking stuff but Battle's quirky, sardonic lyrics are quite infectious and for the most it's a hugely enjoyable record.
