Various Artists - Tom Dunne's 30 Best Irish Hits
Review Date: 29 November 2001
At last - a compilation for the Christmas market that feels like more than just a cheap cash-in. Selected by the listeners to Today FM's excellent Pet Sounds programme, the tracks here range from old-timers such as Van Morrison to new kid on the block David Kitt, taking in, well, just about every other Irish pop act of significance you can think of along the way. Most of the songs chosen have earned classic status, even if inevitably some have been dulled by over-familiarity. Even so, it's good to note the presence of such half-forgotten acts as The Golden Horde and The Fat Lady Sings, more than holding their own with the likes of U2, Thin Lizzy and Ash. Truly a contender for best non-original album of the year; so good in fact that we'll even forgive Tom Dunne the inclusion of a Something Happens song..
