Various Artists - Austin Powers In Goldmember: Official Soundtrack

 rated 2

Review Date: 09 August 2002

Yeah, baby! Everyone's favourite spoof sixties spy is back, and this time he's bringing a groovy new soundtrack with him. Well, er, not quite. Like the Austin Powers movies themselves, this album is essentially a ragbag of recycled material that relies heavily on charm to see it through - and by now Austin's charm is beginning to wear extremely thin. So what have we got? Well, first and foremost there's 'Work It Out', the funky debut single from Destiny's Child singer Beyonce Knowles which confirms that she has a promising solo career ahead of her. Elsewhere in this garish lucky dip you'll find a Britney Spears remix, a 1977 Rolling Stones single and some old, soulful moments from Angie Stone, Paul Oakenfold and Soul Hooligan. There's nothing really bad here as such, but the whole package has a thrown-together feel to it, the tracks never gelling together as they do on really good soundtracks. Some obligatory filler dialogue from Austin and Dr Evil, meanwhile, contains nothing you need to hear more than once and confirms that the series is clearly on its last legs. Time for some new ideas, Mr Myers!
