Tracy Chapman - Telling Stories

Review Date: 22 February 2000

I love Tray Chapman. Now don't get me wrong. By that I simply mean that I am deeply emotionally involved with the person I perceive her to be, and I want to lock her in a box so none of you grotty, dirty people can have her. I feel this way because of her music - the eponymous album, New Beginnings and Cross Roads were all hugely significant moments in acoustic musical progression in the last decade and a half. So what of Tracey's latest offering? Again, it's touching, melodic and generically indescribable, with
'First Try' standing out. These albums are slow burners, though, so whatever song I praise here I will change my mind in a month. Do get this though, she hasn't lost it. But remember, she's mine, all mine.
