Tindersticks - Can Our Love
Review Date: 22 May 2001
Masters of miserabilism Tindersticks are ten years old - and they celebrate by releasing their most soulful, stripped-down album to date. Can Our Love is just eight tracks long but since each one is slow and stately, it's a record with an almost epic feel. With the band's trademark string arrangements considerably pared back, Stuart Staples' mumbling undertaker voice is well to the fore here - and he rises to the occasion by turning in some exquisite vocal performances. This is beautiful, lethargic music; you wouldn't want to listen to it every day but in the right circumstances, it's not far short of perfect.
