It's 25 years since heroin claimed the life of singer Tim Buckley, but his critical reputation is as high as it's ever been. Since his original albums were mostly patchy affairs, this 34-track compilation is the perfect introduction to the Buckley back catalogue. Backed by music that drew on folk, psychedelic rock and progressive jazz influences, Buckley's voice was capable of tremendous emotional expression, ranging from tender tearfulness to anguished crooning. Like his son Jeff, whose own career was cut short by death in 1997, Tim Buckley was a distinctive talent whose memory deserves to be cherished.
