The Vines - Highly Evolved

 rated 4

Review Date: 08 July 2002

Now that Oasis have clearly run out of steam, the time is ripe for some younger pretenders to breathe new life into the sleeping spirit of rock'n'roll. The Strokes and The Hives have already done their bit, and on the evidence of this blistering debut, The Vines are quite fit to join them. A brooding Australian four-piece fronted by the volatile Craig Nicholls, this is clearly a band that values instinct over calculation - and their music is all the better for it. Rough, raucous and impossibly brash, Highly Evolved rips through the standard Beatles, Stones and Nirvana references with remarkable aplomb, adding in an occasional twist of spaced-out psychedelia for good measure. It's brutally straightforward stuff, fuelled by sheer self-belief and all but the most jaded will be caught up in its overpowering sense of excitement. That said, there's a loose-cannon quality about The Vines that suggests they could implode at any moment - so jump on their hurtling bandwagon while you've still got the chance.
