The Veils - The Runaway Found
Review Date: 03 March 2004
The Veils arrive on the scene with an impressive pedigree. Not only was New Zealander frontman Finn Andrews's dad Barry a member of XTC, the London-based four-piece have also roped in Bernard Butler to co-produce their debut album. You can see why Butler's such a big fan - with their epic, sweeping guitar sound and gripping androgynous vocals, Andrews and co sound like nothing so much as the reincarnation of Suede. And with an abundance of manic performances and soul-baring lyrics on display, this is tailor-made for serious young men in long black coats everywhere. Occasionally The Veils overdo the passion and end up sounding merely shrill and overwrought. But make no mistake, this is one of the most impressive indie debuts in years - and Andrews is surely a massive star in the making.
