The Strokes - Hard To Explain

 rated 4

Review Date: 03 April 2002

Hot on the heels of their sellout Dublin performance, the hippest band in the world right now repay their Irish fans with a limited edition mini-album that's only available in this country. It contains the New Yorkers' first three singles (The Modern Age, Hard To Explain and Last Nite), together with a live version of 'Take It Or Leave It' and a new song 'When It Started' which suggest that the storming debut album Is That It wasn't just a flash in the pan. Even if you feel that the hype surrounding The Strokes has become just a bit ridiculous - and in fairness, the band themselves admit this - it's hard not to be seduced by these propulsive, thrilling tunes, which sound like the best bits of Blondie, Television and the Velvet Underground rolled into one. Get your hands on this stylish package if you can - it's destined to become a valuable collectors item.
