The Rolling Stones - A Bigger Bang
Review Date: 13 September 2005
The Rolling Stones still call themselves the best live band in the world. That's as maybe, but it doesn't make up for the fact that they haven't made a really good album for a quarter of a century. The best thing you can say about A Bigger Bang is that at least they sound like they've made a real effort this time. The energy levels are high throughout, and Mick Jagger growls his way through these dirty blues-rock tunes like he's having the time of his life. The only problem is that most of the songwriting just isn't up to scratch, and at 16 tracks the album is way too long. A few moments do recall the Stones' past glories - but if you're not a diehard fan, you might be better off saving your money for their new world tour instead.
