The Paddingtons - First Comes First

 rated 3

Review Date: 17 November 2005

Adoring fans, hyped-up gigs, supermodel groupies - sound familiar? Yes, it's clear that these punk pretenders from Hull have studied the Libertines' blueprint closely and decided to adopt it as their own. And while they may lack the sense of danger that made Pete Doherty's crew so exciting, the Paddingtons' debut album is undeniably brimming with buzzcut riffs and youthful charm. Forget the lazy comparisons with the Clash - with their puppy-like energy and bubblegum tunes, they've got a lot more in common with the Ramones, or even early Ash. In due course they'll have to work a little harder on developing their own personality. But packed with more spirit than a case of Jack Daniels, this is fine for now.
