The Others - The Others
Review Date: 08 February 2005
The problem with having a great new band on the scene is that there's generally a bunch of lesser imitators trailing along in their wake. The Others have the same liking for guerrilla gigs and outrageous punk-rock behaviour as the Libertines - but there the similarities end. True, frontman Dominic Masters has a kind of demented charisma that's not a million miles away from that of Pete Doherty. But his guttural bellow of a voice borders on the unlistenable - and his crass, working-class-hero lyrics make Noel Gallagher sound like, well, John Lennon. The band kick up a spirited racket and there are a few decent tunes, but really it all just makes you feel sad that the Libertines will probably never make another album. One to avoid.
