The first album for 12 years from this legendary Australian band is, remarkably enough, more than good enough to take its place alongside their classic records of the 80s. The songs are as tuneful and eloquent as ever but the differences between the two songwriters has become starker; Grant McLennan's are straightforward and warm-hearted while Robert Forster's are considerably more biting and mournful. Backing music this time comes from riot grrls Sleater-Kinney, and very good it is too. In fact this is one of those rare albums where a host of disparate elements have gelled together beautifully, creating a record that is both timeless and classic. Highly recommended.
