The Dandy Warhols - Welcome to the Monkey House
Review Date: 23 May 2003
The Dandy Warhols may be David Bowie's favourite band, but so far the Oregonians are best known for their super-catchy single 'Bohemian Like You', the soundtrack to one of Vodafone's most successful adverts. The good news is that there's plenty more where that came from on Welcome To The Monkey House, easily Courtney Taylor-Taylor and co's best album to date. The basic template here is indie-rock of the most traditional kind - edgy, arrogant and impeccably tuneful. What really elevates it above the competition, however, is the contribution of Nick Rhodes (ex-Duran Duran) on production duties. Not only has he persuaded the Dandys to drop the self-indulgent psychedelic wigouts that marred previous outings, he's also given their stoner anthems a smart new electro-sheen. Looks like Dame David was right after all - it shouldn't be long now before this lot are selling a lot more than mobile phones.
